The LANAP® Procedure in New Braunfels, TX

LANAP®
(Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure)

Basic Steps of the LANAP® Protocol

Researchers and clinicians have made great strides in discovering new treatment for gum disease (periodontal disease). Conservative periodontal procedures have now been implemented into daily practice and allow for greater preservation of tooth structures. The Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP®) is one such method. Dr. Todd Smith and Dr. Michael Cole are LANAP® certified dentists who provide this method of gum disease treatment in New Braunfels, TX.

LANAP® is used to treat moderate to severe cases of gum disease and is usually completed within two visits, depending on the number of sites that are recommended for treatment. A local anesthetic will be administered for your comfort during the procedure. Once your gum tissues are numb, the laser will be directed into the spaces between your teeth and gums, which is where periodontal disease (gum disease) occurs. The slim laser gently removes dead or necrotic tissue, allowing access to deep periodontal pockets. An ultrasonic instrument, which produces a stream of water and mechanical vibration, is then placed on the tooth surface to debride the plaque and tartar deposits from the root surface. Hand instruments designed to scale the root surfaces may also be used to ensure thorough cleaning. The laser is once again placed into the pocket and initiates coagulation of the tissues. The procedure is complete once gum tissues are gently pressed against the tooth surface, sealing the pockets at the top margins of the soft tissues.

Following LANAP® treatment for gum disease, it is imperative that you maintain the recommended post-operative procedures in order to achieve your best results. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to check the healing process. In most cases, you can usually return to your normal routine the same day.

Choosing LANAP® as your treatment for gum disease can improve your periodontal health, providing a more stable foundation to retain your natural teeth. If you are in need of gum disease treatment in New Braunfels, TX, contact Dr. Smith and Dr. Cole today to schedule your laser consultation.
